150 Years of Temple Israel Omaha

What began as an unused meditation room is now a quiet, immersive exhibit space that holds 150 years of Temple Israel’s history, and counting.

I partnered with professional archivists and historians, Jeannette Gabriel PhD and Ben Justman, to design a permanent installation that invites reflection, storytelling, and connection.

This project was a dream come true for my inner history nerd. Working with local historians, viewing artifacts and archival materials up close, and researching Temple Israel’s legacy revealed how deeply entwined the congregation’s and Omaha’s stories are.

The exhibit space honors that legacy with layered storytelling, clean typography, and a contemplative atmosphere. Five panels were designed to be easy to navigate but visually rich, combining photography, illustration, and actual encased artifacts alongside written stories. A searchable kiosk plays images of current Temple life on a wall-mounted screen. It reminds visitors: history is still happening.

Completed in 2023, this project properly recognized the congregation’s 150th anniversary, originally meant to be celebrated in 2020 (but you guessed it - the pandemic had other plans).
